During the summer months, the city installed two dozen bike racks throughout downtown, coordinated bike-safety fairs, offered urban-cycling techniques classes, printed bike maps and put in new bike lanes on Southeast 26th Street.

A proposed Oregon bill would allow bicyclists to roll through stop signs only in residential neighborhoods and is sponsored by a freshman legislator, Rep. Jules Bailey, D-Portland. Advocates argue that allowing bicyclists to make rolling stops makes it easier to maintain momentum, encouraging cycling in general and would take cyclists away from busy but dangerous arterial streets with few stops and into neighborhoods that have little traffic and many stops.
The measure is modeled after a similar law in Idaho that allows bicyclists to treat stop signs like yield signs. This measure is drawing fire in the Oregon legislature for a law that may be lethal for bicyclists.
If bicyclists are allowed to roll through a stop sign at an intersection, then how are operators of motor vehicles supposed to react to them?

Apparently the 1997 Lincoln Towncar made a left turn in front of the bicyclist causing the fatal bicycle / car accident.

We often see these types of car accidents where the driver fails to yield the right of way to the other vehicle, car, motorcycle, bicycle, and even pedestrians. Usually it's just inattention of the driver not seeing the other person who is going straight through the intersection and has the right of way. And in the case of motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrian, the smaller silhouette makes it harder to see them. This does not relieve them of responsibility or liability for causing the collision.
If you have been involved in a similar bicycle accident, call the Andrew Kim Law Firm, PLLC for a free consultation at

There are big plans for a safer and easier commute for bicyclists commuting from West Seattle to downtown Seattle but much still needs fixing. Cyclists face potholes, standing water in the uneven pavement, railroad tracks, faded bike lane stripes, and the constant threat between freight trucks and northbound cyclists entering from the West Seattle Bridge trail from causing a bicycle accident.
Another hazardous area bike riders must cross is East Marginal Way South in Seattle to reach the bike lane to downtown Seattle. Truck drivers tend to show courtesy toward the bicyclists, but sight lines are poor enough that cyclists shun two traffic signals, instead choosing to cross wherever the coast is clear.
