According to the Washington State Patrol, a 51-year-old Quilcene man was hit by a car and killed when riding a bike on Highway 101, Komonews.com reports. 

The Washington State Patrol Trooper stated that the bicyclist entered the roadway in front of the car just outside Discovery Bay, WA.  The driver of the car did not receive a ticket for the bicycle accident but he was cited for driving with a suspended license.

A 29 year old man was hit by a car at about 10:10 pm after getting off a Metro bus and trying to cross 9th Avenue SW at an unmarked intersection near SW Elmgrove Street in the Highland Park area of Seattle.  He was critically injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

The 51 year old driver of the Chrysler Lebaron that struck the pedestrian was traveling north on 9th Avenue SW.  According to the police, the driver showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  He was also taken to Harborview for a blood draw for further investigation of DUI.

A bicyclist was struck by a silver pickup at 8:54 p.m. on Friday May 2, 2009 in north Spokane, Washington at the corner of Post Street and Cora Avenue.

On March 29, 2009, a pedestrian woman was killed after attempting to run across Interstate 5 in Everett and being struck by two vehicles.  According to the Washington State Patrol, the woman was hit in the northbound lanes of I-5 near Everett Mall at about 8:30 pm.  Neither driver was hurt according to WSP.

On February 4, 2009, a 25-year-old suspected car prowler suffered life-threatening injuries after running onto an I-5  on ramp near the Washington State Convention Trade Center in Seattle where he was struck by at least one vehicle.  He was running away from a Seattle Police traffic-enforcement officer who yelled at him to stop but the man kept running and was able to lose the officer in the foot chase.  The man was taken taken to Harborview Medical Center.

A 39-year-old Seattle cyclist was killed in a collision with a van on February 4, 2009 in Ballard on 24th Avenue NW near the intersection of NW 65th Street.  The bicyclist was riding downhill south on 24th Avenue NW when he entered the two-way left turn lane, attempting to pass a van on the left.

The van moved into the left turn lane and the bicycle and rider went underneath the van.  Medics performed CPR at the scene on the cyclist who suffered life-threatening injuries.  He was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he later died.  The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.  The case is still under investigation.

A man was fatally hit by several cars after he got out of a car that had pulled over onto the left shoulder of the southbound lanes of I-5 near Boeing Field in Seattle to vomit.  He then wandered across the median and into the northbound lanes of I-5 when he was hit by several cars that did not stop at the scene.  It was dark and rainy at about 3:45 am.

Bicycling change in works for national parks

The Washington Post reported that the The Interior Department issued a proposed rule that would make it easier for mountain bikers and other cyclists to ride through the back country of national parks. 

Currently, the National Park Service must go through a rule making process before allowing mountain bikes on hiking and horse trails.  The change would give park superintendents greater discretion in allowing bikers in by waiving the formal rule making requirement. 

The International Mountain Bicycling Association supports this proposed rule to allow better access to the trails while environmentalists oppose it saying bicyclists may pose a danger to hikers resulting in bicycle accidents.
