The Governors Highway Safety Association lists five reasons for not speeding.

Save lives - Slowing down increases your chances for surviving the crash.

Save money - Speeding reduces fuel efficiency.  The Department of Energy estimates that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph, you most likely pay $0.20 more per gallon.

Save the Earth - More gas consumed translates into more CO2 in the atmosphere. The faster you go the more fuel you consume.

Save yourself a ticket - Obey the speed limit or you will pay the fine.

Save your license - Each speeding ticket can increase points on your driving record.  You may lose your license in the process and increase your insurance premiums.

Drunk driving is a cause of many motor vehicle accidentsThe Washington State Court System posted in its 2008 Annual Report that over 40,000 DUI charges were filed in WA State in the past year.

This represents a decrease in over 5% of the total number of DUI charges in Washington from 2007.  Over 17,000 people were convicted of DUI in Washington in 2008.  Over 18,000 people in Washington were able to resolve their DUI case by way of a reduction to a lesser offense (Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving).  And over 8,500 people in 2008 entered into a deferred prosecution as a result of their Washington DUI.

In addition to criminal charges, the family of the deceased may recover damages in a wrongful death civil suit. Washington State's wrongful death statue allows the surviving spouse, child or parent to file a lawsuit on behalf of their deceased loved one.

A 29 year old man was hit by a car at about 10:10 pm after getting off a Metro bus and trying to cross 9th Avenue SW at an unmarked intersection near SW Elmgrove Street in the Highland Park area of Seattle.  He was critically injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

The 51 year old driver of the Chrysler Lebaron that struck the pedestrian was traveling north on 9th Avenue SW.  According to the police, the driver showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  He was also taken to Harborview for a blood draw for further investigation of DUI.

This is case where liability will be disputed by the car driver's insurance since the pedestrian was walking in an unmarked crosswalk at night.  However, the car driver was most likely driving under the influence impairing his vision, reaction time, and ability to drive.  It's important to contact an experienced personal injury attorney to investigate the facts of the car accident as soon as possible.

22-year-old Jace Delgado of Battle Ground, Washington crashed his car into the rear of a school bus on state Highway 503 in Brush Prairie, Washington.  The bus driver Nina Millard also of Battle Ground was heading northbound near NE 149th Street when she stopped at a railroad crossing.

Delgado was following an SUV north on Highway 503 also behind the school bus.  The SUV driver changed lanes but Delgado was unable to stop in time and ended up underneath the back of the bus.  He suffered back pain and was taken by ambulance to Southwest Washington Medical Center where he was treated and released.  The bus driver was not injured according to the report.

Oftentimes, a driver in an accident may not experience immediate pain at the scene and will tell the investigating officer that she feels "fine" and so the police report indicates the driver was not injured.  Insurance companies will try use this against you but as long as you see a medical professional as soon after the car accident as possible, you will have a better argument to make your case.

The Washington State Patrol will be looking for aggressive and reckless drivers near the Hood Canal Bridge which will be closed for six weeks for construction.

Speeding and other aggressive behaviors may result in car accidents and/or road rage incidents.  Therefore the State Patrol asks that motorists call 9-1-1 and report any reckless behavior, providing dispatchers with a vehicle description and location.

The WSP asks you to please remember that collisions resulting in serious injury or fatality require lengthy investigations, making the commute time longer than expected so please be patient.  If you are involved in a fender bender, you should safely remove your vehicle from the roadway if practical to do so.  The Washington State Patrol's goal is to see zero fatalities or serious injury collisions during this time period as well as to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

The Seattle, Bellevue, Washington attorneys at Andrew Kim Law Firm represents people injured in car accidents whether through negligent or reckless driving of the other driver.  Call us for a free initial consultation at 1-800-636-3676.

Accident Response Fees?

A woman in Winter Haven, Florida was involved in a car accident in February.  Almost immediately after the crash, local police officers and firefighters showed up at the scene.  The quick response wasn't the surprise to the driver Shirly Kimel.  Instead it was a $315 bill she received from the city for the cost of the police and fire department responding.

Kimel stated “I always thought this sort of thing was covered by my taxes.”  It used to be.  But last July, Winter Haven became one of a few dozen cities in the country to start charging “accident response fees.” The idea is to shift the expense of tending to and cleaning up crashes directly to at-fault drivers.  Either they, or their insurers, are expected to pay.

The problem is that car insurance is not likely to cover this expense which leaves the driver stuck with the bill.  With the downturn in the economy and local governments trying to make up for lost revenues, creative measures such as this accident response fee and other types of fees are popping up around the country.

Let's hope that the State of Washington doesn't get wind of this and start charging us for the privilege of having the police and fire department respond to a car accident.

The Andrew Kim Law Firm, PLLC represents persons injured in a car accident, and other motor vehicle crashes.  If you have questions about your case and want to speak with a Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, Washington personal injury attorney, call us toll free at 1-800-636-3676.
