Tricks Your Insurance Adjuster Doesn’t Want You to Know About

You may be shocked at the settlement offered to you by your insurance adjuster after your car accident. Unfortunately, most adjusters will low-ball you and give you a claim that isn’t even worth considering, hoping your shock and inexperience will lead you to accept an offer without question.

Don’t Fall for These Common Adjuster Tricks

Adjusters have a goal of getting you to settle for as little as possible, and have an entire arsenal of tricks they use. Here, we discuss them and how you can turn the tables. Start with the following advice:

  • Don’t accept the first offer. The adjuster will likely offer you a low amount for your claim, but by no means should you accept it. Adjusters typically have wiggle room and are often authorized to go up a certain amount in order to get a quick settlement. Even if the adjuster claims he doesn’t, he probably does. Tell him why you think you deserve more than what he is offering, and there’s a good chance you’ll get a higher amount.
  • Ask for a reduction in comps. In order to determine how much to offer you, the adjuster will compare your vehicle to several others of the same make and model. The problem is, they often use too many and the cars of lower value will drag down yours. Ask the adjuster to reduce the amount of comparables, or to only use the top five. You may find your settlement offer becomes higher.
  • You can ask to “total it out.” Each state determines if a vehicle is totaled based on a percentage. For example, some states considered a vehicle totaled if 50 percent or more of the car is damaged. If your vehicle is close but below that threshold, you can ask the adjuster to “total it out.” This means you’ll get a check you can use for your next vehicle and your case is closed. Tell the adjuster there may be hidden damage that can cause problems in the future. Chances are, the adjuster will agree with you.
