You send your child on the school bus just about every day assuming she will make it to school safely and have a wonderful time. The thought never really crossed your mind that she would become seriously injured in a school bus accident. Unfortunately, that became your reality.

The school bus in which your daughter was traveling flipped over because the driver fell asleep behind the wheel. She and several other students were flung from their seats, and her head hit the frame of the bus. Although the doctors are hopeful, they aren’t sure how long it will take for your daughter to become the person she was before, it she gets there at all.

Types of Catastrophic Brain Injuries That Can Be Caused by School Bus Accidents

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are one of the most common catastrophic injuries that can occur in a motor vehicle accident. While no brain injury should be considered minor, the severity of damage can vary depending on how the brain was impacted in the crash. Three types of brain injury are:

  • Diffuse axonal. This TBI occurs by shaking or a strong rotation in the head. The type of injury happens because the unmoving brain lags behind the movement of the skull and causes brain structures to tear.
  • Coup-contrecoup. This type of injury occurs when a person receives a blow to the head that causes the brain to move back and forth. Contusions are formed where the injury initially takes place and on the other side of the brain where the brain hits the skull.
  • Concussions. Concussions are often thought to be mild, but the truth is, they can be quite dangerous. Concussions can cause diffuse axonal, which can lead to permanent brain damage. Additionally, a blood clot can occur and cause death.
