You were able to protect your child while you were  pregnant and you hoped that you could always do the same when she finally entered the world. Unfortunately, however, that was not the case and she was injured before she was even out of the womb for an hour. Perhaps the doctor used his forceps too forcefully to remove her from the birth canal, or he wasn’t able to get her out fast enough and she didn’t receive enough oxygen. Whatever the reason, your baby will now have to live with a catastrophic brain injury for the rest of her life.

Catastrophic Brain Injuries Doctors Can Cause During Birth

Many babies suffer minor injuries during their grand entrances into the world and are fine after a few days. Some, however, are not so lucky and have to live with the effects permanently. Some of the catastrophic brain injuries that can occur during birth include:

  • Perinatal asphyxia. The result of a lack of oxygen to the brain, perinatal asphyxia occurs in about four of every 1,000 full-term births. Some of the causes of this devastating injury include lack of oxygen in the mother’s blood stream and high or low blood pressure in the mother, both of which should be monitored during labor. Also, prolonged labor or problems with the umbilical cord can deprive the baby of oxygen during delivery.
  • Bleeding in the brain. This injury occurs when a blood vessel ruptures somewhere in the skull and is most common in very premature infants. Also called intracranial hemorrhage, this injury can cause much damage to the brain and to the child’s quality of life.
