Pelvic fractures are likely more common—and more serious—than you may think and can result from several different types of accidents and conditions.

A pelvic fracture was something you never worried about, until you happened to experience one yourself. This injury is typically thought of as one that elderly people suffer—not something someone young and active like you would experience. The truth is, people of all ages can fracture their pelvis and the complications of this injury may be worse than you thought.

A ring-like structure of bones located at the end of the trunk, the pelvis provides sockets for your legs and protection for a few internal organs. It also serves as a connective point for many muscles, large nerves, and blood vessels, which can cause massive blood loss if they are torn. Serious fractures in which the vessels are compromised can even be fatal.

Types of Accidents That Cause Pelvic Fractures

Although the pelvis is vital to the movement and health of your body, it is also vulnerable and can be prone to breakage in certain situations. Pelvises are fractured for many different reasons, including:

  • Sports. Growing teens often mistake fractured pelvises for pulled muscles. Undetected avulsion fractures of the pelvis occur when a small piece of the pelvic bone near the hamstring is torn away. Although uncomfortable, this type of fracture doesn’t typically cause instability in the pelvis or internal organ damage.
  • High-energy impact. Getting hit by a vehicle or another event that involves high-energy impact is one of the most common ways to experience a fracture. These accidents are often the most dangerous, as they can cause life-threatening injuries.
  • Osteoporosis. Elderly people with weak bones due to osteoporosis are at risk for suffering from pelvic fractures after falling.

Were You Hurt Because of Negligence?

If you experienced a pelvic fracture because of someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to receive financial compensation that can cover your medical fees and time away from work. The Andrew Kim Law Firm has helped many accident victims in the Seattle area receive the help they needed, and may be able to do the same for you.
