If you drive on I-5, SR 163, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, or anywhere in Tacoma, chances are  you’ll share the road with a large tractor trailer. Whether you have a car or truck, your small vehicle dwindles in comparison to the large 18-wheeler that towers over you.

As you might imagine, getting into an accident with a truck as big as this can cause serious—and even fatal—injuries. Truck accidents that involve buses or trucks are quite common, but could be prevented.

Driving Safely Around Trucks

You may be able to prevent becoming involved in a serious bus or truck accident by taking a few safety precautions while driving:

  • Give the truck space. Following too closely or riding along the side of a truck puts you at risk for getting into an accident. Truckers often aren’t able to see vehicles that are too close to them, so the truck may crash into you as a result. By keeping your distance, you have more time to react to what the truck does, and a better chance of the driver seeing you.
  • Avoid pulling to the right. Do not pull to the right of a truck at an intersection, even if the truck doesn’t have its turn signals on, as the driver could be planning a turn anyway. If your vehicle is to the right of a truck, you may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the truck could collide with you as it leaves the intersection.
  • Beware of inclement weather. Driving conditions become more dangerous when rain, snow, and fog are present. Trucks can often skid and jackknife because of this. Keep your distance and pay close attention to what is going on around you to prevent an accident.
