Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities for the First Three Quarters of 2011 | Tacoma Car Accident Lawyer

The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminsitration released this article, comparing the number of fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents during the first three quarters (January through September) of 2011 against the first three quarters of years past.

According to their data, it is estimated that 24,050 people died in motor vehicle crashes during the first 9 months of 2011.  Compared to the estimated 24,437 lives lost resulting from a car accident over the first nine months of 2010, we see a 1.6% decline.

In relation, The Federal Highway Administration released data that showed vehicle miles traveled (VMT) during the first three quarters of 2011 decreased by approximately 29.8 billion miles, which translates to a 1.3% decrease.  There is also data that shows the fatalities per 100 million VMT for the first nine months of 2011 is estimated to decrease to 1.08 fatalities from 1.09 fatatlies per 100 million VMT in 2010.

Overall, we have seen a decrease in motor vehicle collision fatalities of about 24% over the last 10 years, from 43,510 in 2005 to 32,885 in 2010.  Similarly, we have seen drop in the fatality rate to 1.10 fatalies per 100 million VMT in 2010 from 1.46 in 2005.
