Kitsap Boy Drowns After Disappearing With Alcoholic Mother

An 8-year-old Silverdale boy, who was found washed up on Fox Island, died in an accidental drowning according to Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office. The boy, Azriel Carver, was with his mother last Saturday when the two disappeared. The mother and child had been on their way to visit woman’s stepfather but never arrived at their destination.

According to friends and family, the mother, 29-year-old Shantina Smiley, was a recovering alcoholic who had recently suffered a relapse. She also had a history of trouble regarding her son, neglect accusations, and abuse charges. In fact, Child Protective Services fielded at least ten calls involving the woman and her child, the latest in April of last year.

Smiley called her boyfriend several times on Saturday to say that she was lost or had stopped for food. The woman’s van was found in Olympia the following day partially submerged in the water. The search for Smiley continues throughout the area.
