In the minutes after midnight on Friday, several car accidents on Interstate 5
South outside of Seattle were caused by a kayak, which authorities believe flew off of a car or truck minutes before. Two women were transported to the hospital with injuries after a vehicle swerved to miss the boat and hit another car, scattering more debris.
Now the road is clear, but questions remain: where is the vehicle that didn’t properly secure its dangerous load – and did the driver realize that he or she had created a wreck, or were they unaware that they lost their cargo until later in their trip?
After a Seattle woman was left blind and disfigured following an unsecured load accident on I-405, Washington lawmakers make the consequences more serious for drivers who don’t properly tie down their loads, especially if their load causes serious accidents, injuries, or death. Instead of facing a small ticket and citation for a poorly secured load, the person responsible for the kayak accident on Interstate 5 will face up to a $5,000 fine, a year in prison, and a permanent mark on their record.
