3D Printing Technology May One Day Offer Relief for Burn Victims

Burn victims may no longer have to experience painful skin graft treatments in order to recover, thanks to new technology that is coming out of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre in Toronto. The large burn treatment center is using 3D printing technology to create new skin cells for burn victims.

The typical treatment for burns is the painful process of grafting, in which healthy skin is harvested from another part of the body to cover the existing burn wound. The problem, however, is that a second wound is created from removing the healthy skin, and the experience of collecting the skin is quite painful in itself. This new equipment however, hopes to change all of that.

How the Printer Works

The printer essentially creates new skin that is able to mimic the way the victim’s skin looks. This takes place by collecting healthy skin cells and sending them to a lab for analysis. With the help of a cartridge, the printer then weaves the cells together to create strips of “skin.” The strips are then collected and cultured.

The Advantages of the Printer

The team that created the printer believes that using this technology can help patients heal faster and also cut down on hospital time, which can save burn victims money. Skin grafting donor sites can take months to heal, which means long periods of time spent in the hospital. Since the printer use a gentler process, recovery time could be dramatically reduced.

What This Means for Motorcycle Accident Victims

Although it will be a few years before this technology is widely available, those who experience burns from motorcycle accidents would be able to get back to their normal lives much more quickly with this cutting-edge procedure. And when you have the help of an experienced attorney by your side, you can move on financially, as well.

As the victim of a motorcycle accident, you shouldn’t have to pay for the expenses related to the treatment of your injuries, but unfortunately, that may happen if you take on the insurance company by yourself. The Andrew Kim Law Firm wants to help you stand up for your rights and receive the compensation you deserve.
