Many parents place their children’s car seats on shopping carts, but should they? Find out here if this common practice puts babies in danger.

Car Seats and Shopping Carts Just Don’t Mix

If you’ve been to a grocery store in the Bellevue or Seattle area, you’ve likely seen a child car seat perched atop the sitting area of a shopping cart. It’s easy to see why parents do this: the seats are too heavy to hold, they don’t have room for items if they place the seat in the large basket, and it gives them access to see and interact with their children.

Unfortunately, this common practice is anything but safe. Infants and babies are injured all too often because their parents unknowingly put their lives in danger by placing them in this convenient seat.

A Look at the Numbers

Before you take your baby shopping, consider these alarming statistics:

  • According to a 2010 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, nearly 10,000 babies are injured in the United States each year in their infant seats. The curious thing is that these accidents don’t take place in vehicles, but rather in other situations, such as shopping car accidents.
  • One in ten of these babies were injured so severely that they had to spend at least one night in the hospital.
  • Of the injuries found in the study, 85 percent were due to falls: 65 percent of the infants fell out of the car seats, while 15 percent fell from elevated surfaces such as counters, shopping carts, and tables.
