You enjoy going grocery shopping with your children. Whether you are frequenting Sunset Hill Green Market or Trader Joe’s, you often place them inside of shopping carts.

Carts are convenient and allow you to keep your child from wandering while you are making your purchases. Unfortunately, they also cause thousands of injuries each year. A majority of the injuries are caused by children falling out of the carts; however, many other problems occur, as well.

Keeping Your Children Safe

You never expect to take your child to the grocery store and leave with her injured. Unfortunately, something like that could happen. If you follow these preventative steps, however, you may stop such a tragedy from occurring.

  • Strap her in carefully. Most carts come equipped with safety straps that are designed to keep a child inside the seat. Without the strap, a child can jump out of the seat or even slip out. Ensure that the strap isn’t too snug, however, as a strap that is too tight could cause injuries.
  • Never leave her unattended. Walking away from the cart and not keeping an eye on your child puts her at risk. She could fall out, have a finger pinched, or become stuck attempting to climb out of the cart. Sometimes supervision is the best method in keeping your child safe.
  • Use carts designed just for kids. Some stores provide carts that feature play cars in the front in which children can sit. Seating your child in that car is often safer than placing her in the basket. The seats are lower to the floor should a fall occur, and these carts are typically more stable.
