The Seattle P.I.
posted this article
after a press conference on Thursday with Seattle mayor Mike McGinn
In the press conference, McGinn announced the status of Nickerson Street one year post "road diet." In August of 2010, Nickerson Street from 13th Avenue to the Fremont Bridge
underwent a $241,000 remodel, going from 4 lanes to 2 with a center turn lane. A new uphill bike lane was also added along with 2 more painted crosswalks. The idea behind the "diet" was to make travel safer for bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers. With the new system, pedestrian safety improves as they have fewer lanes of traffic to cross when crossing the street. Bicyclists also have more space and traffic no longer has to wait for traffic making left turns with the new turn lane.
Traffic collisions on Nickerson Street have dropped 23% compared to the previous 5-year average. Before the change, an average of 18,500 vehicles traveled Nickerson Street each day. While the average amount of vehicle traffic has dropped slightly by 200 vehicles, Nickerson Street still can handle traffic while having fewer traffic collisions. The Andrew Kim Law Firm
