Prevent Yourself From Getting Into a Bus Accident

Many motorists find it frustrating to drive behind a bus. Buses often drive more slowly, make frequent stops, and require lots of room to make turns. Because of their special needs, they often are involved in a variety of accidents.

Motorists and passengers can suffer from serious injuries if they are involved in these dangerous accidents. A crash that takes only a minute to happen can cause grave consequences that can last your entire life.

Driving Safely Around Buses

The next time you see a bus on Charles Street, Discovery Park Boulevard, or any road in the Seattle area, follow these safety tips, as doing so could prevent you from becoming involved in a crash:

  • Keep your distance. Buses make frequent stops. Riding close to them could result in you causing a rear-end collision. Instead, keep at least two seconds’ worth of space between you and the back of the bus. This much room gives you a chance to stop in time before colliding with the bus’s bumper.
  • Beware of the driver’s blind spots. Bus drivers have difficulty seeing vehicles behind their vehicles and those on the sides. To prevent the bus driver from unintentionally crashing into you, do your best to stay out of these areas. Additionally, if you are too close and can’t see the side mirrors when riding behind the bus, the driver probably can’t see you.
  • Pay attention. Looking down at your phone or paying attention to a passenger in your car could stop you from seeing the bus change lanes, change speed, or stop. Consequently, you could cause a crash. Instead, when you’re behind the wheel, your main responsibility is to pay close attention to what is going on around you.
