bicycle safety tipsBiking can be a fun family activity, a great way to exercise, and a cheap way to get around the Seattle area. However, it can also be dangerous, and victims of bicycle accidents can suffer debilitating injuries or die. Approximately 1,100 deaths were caused by bicyclist and motor vehicle accidents in 2015, and 488,123 people were treated in emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. What can you do to keep yourself and your family safe?

Follow These Guidelines to Reduce Your Risk of an Accident When Biking

Bicyclists must follow traffic rules and have a right to be treated as an equal user on the road. By practicing safety tips, you may be able to avoid a crash with a careless motorist. Here are guidelines to teach your children and to follow yourself:

  • Protect your head by wearing a helmet any time you ride your bike.
  • Stay visible so that drivers can see you. At night, wear reflective clothing and utilize bike lights.
  • Use hand signals to let other motorists know what direction you are going and when you plan to turn. Also, make and maintain eye contact with drivers if at all possible.
  • Obey traffic laws and signals.
  • Drive in the same direction as traffic. Do not ride against traffic or on the wrong side of the road where motorists do not expect to see you.
  • Stay alert to your surroundings and motorists ahead and behind you who may cause an accident due to unsafe driving practices. Be proactive in avoiding a dangerous situation when you can.
  • Avoid distractions like talking on a cellphone, texting, or using headphones to listen to music.
  • Do not pass other vehicles on the right where it is harder for motorists to see you.
  • Be certain that your bike is in good repair and check the brakes and tires regularly.

Even if you follow these safety tips, a negligent driver could cause an accident resulting in you or a family member suffering serious injuries. Let Andrew Kim help you hold the driver accountable for compensating you. To begin the process, call our office to schedule your free consultation.
