This April, six injured Washington State cyclists filed a lawsuit against the city of Seattle. All six bike accident victims crashed along the South Lake Union streetcar track when they lost control of their bikes along the rutted rails. Although a King County judge disagreed that the city was unreasonable when designing and placing the streetcar rails, he agreed with the cyclists that the rails were a danger to cyclists. In addition, the city of Seattle agreed to change the way they implement streetcar projects in the future and add warning signs and a separate bike lane to the area where the bikers crashed.

Rails create uneven pavement: a hazard to cyclists

Streetcar lines may be a great idea as far as public transportation goes, but any train, railway, or streetcar that runs on or across roads creates a real hazard for those on bikes. Why? Road bikes have thin tires and only balance on two wheels. Any disruption in the pavement – from potholes to puddles to gravel – can cause a cyclist to slide, slip, or otherwise lose control. Falling into a rut where a streetcar track lies or running into an obstruction caused by a railway crossing can throw a rider from his or her bike.

Preventing train track bicycle accidents is as simple as being aware of your surroundings and wary of any changes in the pavement. However, city planners and road designers also have a responsibility to place tracks away from bike lanes and warn cyclists of dangerous areas.
