According to the Seattle Times and West Seattle Police, a 15-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries in a
car and cyclist collision at the intersection of Delridge Way Southwest and Southwest Cloverdale Street.
While the teen was wearing a bicycle helmet, the Seattle Fire Department reported that the boy did not stop at a stop sign and slammed into a truck that had right-of-way. Emergency responders rushed the teen to Harborview Medical Center, where he is being treated for his injuries.
The
Washington bike accident is still under investigation, though the driver of the pickup truck is not expected to be cited or charged. The intersection was closed for under an hour as police collected evidence at the scene of the accident.
A note: while helmets do not prevent all
head injuries from taking place during a bicycle accident, they have been proven to significantly reduce the occurrence and seriousness of traumatic brain injuries.
