Are motorcyclists required to have insurance?

A: No. Motorcycles are exempt from insurance. State law requires operators of cars and trucks to have insurance, but the
chapter that covers insurance does not govern the operation of a motorcycle.

See RCW 46.30.020, and read the state's definition of a motorcycle here.

Motor-driven cycles and mopeds are also not governed by the insurance chapter.
