Do you know which sport is to blame for causing the most catastrophic injuries among young females? The answer may surprise you.

What sport causes the most catastrophic injuries in girls?

A:

When parents think of the most dangerous sports for their daughters to play, they typically come up with lacrosse, soccer, basketball, and field hockey. However, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, this isn’t the case. The sport that causes the most severe injuries among females is actually cheerleading.

Taking a Closer Look At Cheerleading-Related Catastrophic Injuries

If you’ve ever watched a cheerleading squad in action, you may have noticed the cheerleaders do much more than just cheer. You’ll likely see females thrown into the air while performing flips, twirls, and other dangerous maneuvers. Many also incorporate gymnastics and tumbling into their routines, as well. Although these eye-catching moves are partially to blame for the catastrophic injuries that take place, other elements also come into play. The following is an overview:

  • Why they occur. Cheerleading is not recognized by the NCAA and state-level agencies that govern high school sports as a sport, so cheerleading is not subject to the same standards of safety as recognized sports. Those who run cheerleading squads often aren’t held accountable for the safety of their athletes by any authority. As a result, accidents are more likely to happen.
  • The numbers. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that cheerleading accounted for 65 percent of all direct catastrophic injuries to female athletes at the high school level and 70.8 at the college level, during the years from 1982 to 2009.
  • The types of injuries. During those years, 110 high school and college cheerleaders suffered skull fractures, closed-head injuries, or cervical spine injuries resulting in paralysis, permanent brain injury, and death. A few cheerleaders also suffered from heat stroke and cardiac issues.
