A: An IME is an "independent medical examination" requested by your insurance company under your PIP or Med Pay coverage to determine whether your past treatment and/or future treatment was reasonable and necessary and related to the accident, and therefore whether they will pay for treatment.
The IME doctor will complete a report to your insurance company after the exam advising about your injuries and whether any future treatment should be covered. More often than not, these doctors are not truly independent and will find reasons to terminate your coverage. I call them "involuntary medical examinations" because you are forced to undergo these as part of your insurance contract.
