Truck accidents are frightening and devastating, and often leave victims with brain injuries that can affect them for the rest of their lives.

Heads Up: The Brain Injuries You Could Suffer When Involved in a Truck Accident

In truck versus car accidents, the trucks are typically always victorious. Small passenger cars and even pick-up trucks are no match when it comes to massive tractor trailers. Unfortunately, this often means debilitating and life-changing injuries for those involved. Some of the most dangerous are traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries Truck Accident Victims Often Experience

Although some TBIs are considered minor, others can leave victims paralyzed and with memory loss. It’s anyone’s guess as to which you can experience, but the following are all possibilities:

  • Concussions. Perhaps the most minor brain injury, the concussion is still an injury that should be taken seriously. Caused by blows to the head or violent shaking of the upper body, a concussion is characterized as a brain shift in the skull. This type of injury can cause loss of consciousness, headaches, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, and nausea.
  • Coup-countrecoup injuries. Coup-countrecoup injuries occur when the brain is violently shifted in the skull and results in damage to both sides of the brain. Bruises occur when the brain hits one side of the skull and then hits the opposite side again as it returns to its proper position. Brain bleeds and swelling, disruptions to the cerebrospinal fluid, and skull tissue compressing or penetrating the brain can be found in more serious cases.
  • Contusions. An object that comes in direct contact with your head can cause a contusion. For instance, hitting the windshield or steering wheel with force can cause a contusion to occur, which results in bleeding in the brain. Large contusions that form may need to be surgically removed.
