Three Things We Wish More Drivers Knew About Preventing Seattle Motorcycle Crashes

When some people witness a Seattle motorcycle crash or hear of an accident case involving a motorcyclist, they automatically assume that the motorcyclist is at fault for the wreck. They reflexively believe that the motorcyclist took an unnecessary risk or was negligent in handling his bike.

Big news: that’s not always the case. While some motorcyclists cause accidents, so too do some car and truck drivers.

Three Common Reasons Why Car and Truck Drivers Cause Motorcycle Crashes

Preconceived—and often incorrect—ideas about motorcyclists cause some people to jump to conclusions. They might not understand that sometimes car and truck drivers can cause accidents by:

  • Failing to look for motorcyclists on the road. A recent study published in the journal Attention, Perception, and Psychophysics found that drivers look for the vehicles that they most often see on the roads. Thus, most drivers expect and look for cars and light trucks before making a turn, changing lanes, or proceeding through an intersection. However, since motorcycles are not as common as cars, they may fail to watch for motorcyclists.
  • Failing to accurately judge the distance or speed of a motorcycle. Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and may be closer than some drivers, who are used to judging the distance of cars and trucks, expect.
  • Blind spots. Motorcycles that are traveling close to cars and trucks may be difficult to see and may be completely engulfed in a driver’s blind spot.

Of course, the more typical reasons for accidents such as distracted driving can also cause some car or truck drivers to cause motorcycle wrecks.

These May Be Causes, But They Are Not Excuses for Seattle Motorcycle Crashes

If you have been hurt by the negligence of a car or truck driver then you may still be able to recover damages for your Seattle motorcycle accident injuries even if a study explains why a car or truck driver may have hurt you.
