As the seasons change and autumn swings into full gear, bicyclists need to take extra precautions to be visible to motorists.  Night falls earlier and the fresh rains require drivers to adjust to the newly slick roads.  For this reason, The Seattle Times posted this article to remind cyclists to take more steps than usual to ensure that they are seen on the roads.

The State of Washington requires cyclists to have light visible 500 feet in front and red reflectors that are visible 600 feet behind.  These must be in use 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise.  In general, the shinier, more reflective and brighter the cyclist is, the better change they have of being seen by motorists.

In the article, The Cascade Bicycle Club recommends the following accessories for bicyclists, especially for the fall season:

*Reflective tape on your helmet

*Orange safety vest

*A bright jacket with reflective piping

*The most powerful battery powered LCD or halogen headlight that you can afford

*Reflectors for the spokes of your bicycle tires, pedals and the rear of your bicycle that is at least 3 inches wide.

Safe biking!
