Knee injuries are common after slip and fall accidents. Although only a doctor can tell you which injury you have, these symptoms indicate a serious problem.

Broken, Bruised, or Torn? Common Knee Injuries After Slip and Fall Accidents

If you fell down an escalator at Northgate Mall or slipped on wet pavement at Wild Waves Theme Park, there’s a chance you’ve injured your knee. In fact, knees injuries are one of the most common outcomes of slip and fall accidents.

The knee is the biggest joint in the body and is comprised of bone, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. When the knee moves in an unsafe manner or has too much pressure placed on it, the components become injured and cause pain, immobility, and other problems.

Common Knee Injuries and Their Symptoms

Although some injuries are minor and can heal with simple treatments, others are more complicated and require surgery, medication, and months of rehabilitation to get better. Common knee injuries include:

  • Fractures. If you fall and land directly on your knee or it hits against something hard, you may fracture the patella, or knee cap. Symptoms of this painful injury include swelling, severe pain in and around the kneecap, a deformed appearance of the knee due to the fractured bone, difficult leg extension, and pain when moving the knee in both directions.
  • Anterior cruciate ligament tear. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is commonly injured when the knee changes directions rapidly or when you land from a jump incorrectly. You may also hear a loud popping sound during the accident. You may have injured you ACL if you feel pain in the knee immediately after the incident, the knee feels unstable, swelling is present, and you are unable to extend the knee.
  • Torn meniscus. If you experience pain, swelling, or clicking in your knee, or if it gives out, you may have a torn meniscus. The meniscus is cartilage that protects the knee and is often damaged by forceful twisting or hyperextension.
