Drinking and Riding: A More Serious Problem Than You Think

If you’re like many of the motorcyclists in Washington, you’ll hop on your bike and attend one of the numerous activities offered in the fall. From the Oyster Fest to the Whisky Extravaganza, Seattle features lots of fun events … but alcohol is a prime feature at many events, and that creates a dangerous problem.

Although you want to have fun during these outings and enjoy what they have to offer, you also know that you should be responsible and save the drinking for after you get home. Unfortunately, many bikers do not make the same choice as you.

The Shocking Numbers Behind Drinking and Riding

Motorcyclists are already vulnerable to becoming injured in accidents, and are even more so when under the influence:

  • According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, about 46 percent of riders who are killed in accidents have alcohol in their systems at the time.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that motorcyclists involved in crashes are 2.5 times more likely to have consumed alcohol than passenger vehicle drivers involved in accidents.
  • In 2007, the number of alcohol-impaired motorcycle crashes that occurred jumped up 10 percent, while the number of passenger vehicle crashes went down 6 percent.
  • A majority of the crashes occur during the weekends at night. In fact, 57 percent of alcohol-impaired operators were killed during the weekend. Most accidents took place between 6 and 9 p.m.
