Slip and Fall Prevention Tips

If you read our slip and fall statistics, you might now have a better idea of how often and to what extent Americans are injured by simple slip and fall accidents. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Safety Council, over one million people a year visit a doctor concerning a slip and fall injury, and 55 percent of those over 40 have already dealt with a debilitating slip and fall during their lifetime.

As personal injury lawyers, we see the pain, trauma, and financial stress that slip and fall injuries create, and we want to prevent future slips and falls in ever way that we can. Although part of the solution is to hold property owners accountable for keeping their land and real estate safe for others, there are also small steps that you can take to protect yourself and your family from fall accidents.

  • The Mayo Clinic recommends that you use assistive devices when present. Hold on to handrails on both sides of the stairwell. Hold on to handles and bars available when entering or exiting the bath or shower. Ask for a helping hand! If you are elderly, consider using a cane or walker to keep you balanced and on your feet.
  • Take your time. Rushing will often lead to falls, especially if the weather is bad or if the space is not properly lit or cared for. Step out of your car instead of jump. Be extra careful on stairs and in unfamiliar places.
  • The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety suggests that choosing the proper footwear is extremely important to safety, especially at the work place. This footwear should be comfortable, decrease foot fatigue, and have good treads and soles. Be sure to wear the proper footwear especially in bad weather - snow, rain, and ice all require boots.
  • At work, flag and report spills - keeping a safe, uncluttered, and clean work environment will prevent falls. Don't assume it is someone else's job to clean up, as leaving a dangerous mess may harm someone.

Remember: although many slip and fall accidents are preventable, some are not. If a property owner is negligent, and this negligence leads directly to your injury, you should seek legal advice concerning your potential premises liability case. If everyone took the time to make sure that their property was safe for others, we would have many fewer tragic slip and fall cases each year.
