7 Children & 2 Moms Injured In Dupont SUV Crash On I-5

Posted on Jul 01, 2009

On Tuesday, June 9, a 2004 Ford Expedition carrying 10 people overturned on Interstate 5 near Dupont after being struck by a Honda Civic. The accident took place at 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-5, when the Expedition struck the side barrier and then rolled across the freeway. Troopers shut down all but one lane of traffic on each side of the freeway while investigating the accident and clearing away the vehicles.

The Civic was driven by a 20-year-old male from Federal Way who has been charged with attempted vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. The van contained a pregnant 31-year-old, a 41-year-old mother, and their eight children between the ages of two and fifteen.

Two children were seriously injured in the two-car accident in Washington, although the Washington State Patrol reported that both children are expected to recover. The Washington State Patrol also reported that a number of the children riding in the van were not properly restrained in seat belts or child safety seats - a detail which may have lead to more serious car accident injuries. Police say the driver of the car will face charges regarding her improperly restrained children.

The two seriously injured children, a 2-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, were taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma for treatment. Although many of the other van passengers were injured in the car wreck, nothing was life threatening. Two of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled across I-5, according to reports.
