A collision between two commercial trucks set off a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 90 outside of Bellevue, leaving one young girl with critical injuries.
According to the Seattle Times, a tractor-trailer on I-90 was not able to slow for traffic near the 133rd Avenue Southeast exit in Bellevue, causing it to jackknife across several lanes of traffic. A logging truck then struck the first big rig, spilling logs onto the road. In the next few seconds, thirteen passenger vehicles were unable to stop before the wreckage and crashed into the pile-up.
Six people suffered minor injuries in the chain reaction crash and one nine-year-old girl was seriously injured and rushed to Harborview Medical Center. Two people in the girl’s car reported that they were not able to avoid the back axle of the logging truck as the vehicle slid out of control, dropping its load as it went.
The pile-up closed the I-90 lanes for four hours as emergency crews cleaned up the wreckage and an investigators collected evidence. The truck driver that was part of the initial collision declined to speak about what caused the crash, but said that the logging truck struck his truck’s left side initially.
