Bus Turns Over On I-5 Filled With Bellevue Washington High School Football Team

Posted on Dec 13, 2008

USA Today reported that a bus filled with 38 people on board crashed on I-5 near Seattle on Friday, November 28. The 12-0 undefeated Bellevue High Wolverines were on their way to complete in the Washington State Division 3A semifinals a the Tacoma Dome against the 9-3 Capital Cougars.

The Washington State Patrol reported that eight people were injured, including one football player riding the bus and one passenger in another car involved in the multi-vehicle crash. The injured were taken to three different area hospitals, although all injuries were minor with one player receiving a minor concussion. The players were wearing their football pads, which remarkably reduced injuries.

The accident was caused by a ladder lying in the freeway, according to State Patrol Trooper Cliff Pratt. Several cars swerved out of the way of the ladder and slammed on brakes. The bus hit a semi-truck and two other cars in the confusion, turning on its side. The players, coaches, and drivers escaped through emergency window exits.

"When the bus veered, you knew there was no way we were going to avoid this," assistant coach Pat Jones said.

The accident resulted in backed up traffic in two southbound lanes, which was cleared up by crews in the ensuing hours after the crash.

"It was real surreal," Coach Pat Jones told KOMO Radio. "The kids kind of kept their cool. Everybody looks like they're going to be OK. We have a couple of kids going to the hospital as a precaution."

The ladder allegedly fell off of a red truck, the driver of which has yet to be located or identified. State law says that drivers can be given a year in jail and a $5,000 fine for having an unsecured load on their vehicle that injures someone.

The semifinals game was rescheduled for the next week. The Wolverines have won five State Championships since 2001.
