Chehalis, WA, Man Charged With Toddler’s Death In Off-Road Accident

Posted on Jan 28, 2009

Forty-one-year-old Benjamin Jones has been charged with vehicular homicide as well as three counts of reckless endangerment after an off-road SUV crash took place earlier this year.

Jones was visibly distraught during the court hearing, where he was joined by supportive friends and family for his sentencing. Even the family of the boy killed in the off-road vehicle accident showed their support and told reporters that they do not blame Jones for the death of their boy, and that the incident was merely a tragic accident.

According to Channel 2 News, Jones took the four children of a friend on a joy ride on a dirt road that runs along Big Hanaford Creek in Chehalis, Washington in his 1987 Suzuki Samauri. He lost control of the vehicle a few minutes later, and the sports utility car slid down an embankment and into a creek roof-down.

All of the passengers were thrown from the car, and police report that no one was wearing a seatbelt. Although three of the children and Jones only suffered minimal injuries, two-year-old Bo Workman was missing.

Washington State Patrol troopers located the boy downstream using heat source technology and pulled the child from the water. Although he was airlifted to Mary Bridge Hospital, he was pronounced dead a few hours later.

The police, Jones, and the Workman family all have conflicting stories surrounding the event. Jones claims that the children were buckled into the vehicle, although police add that the two-year-old should have been in a car seat. Jones reported to police that he had had two beers with dinner but the Workmans insist that Jones was not driving under the influence when he took their children for the ride.

Bo's sister has been taken into child custody following the incident, as police believe that this was more than a tragic accident and that the adults involved were negligent in their care.

Officers report that when they found Jones at the accident scene, he was sobbing, "I killed my friend's son."
