The recent economic crisis has affected the job market, the housing market, and the stock market… but can a bad economy cause a rash of child head injuries in Washington State? According to professor of pediatric Dr. Rachel P. Berger and the Pediatric Academic Society, the answer is a resounding – and scary – yes.
A new study that took place beginning in 2007 and regarding four urban centers in the United States, including Seattle, Washington, shows that poor economic times leads to a significant increase in traumatic brain injuries in infants, babies and toddlers. Researches believe that these head injury and brain damage cases in America are linked to child abuse and shaken baby incidents that could be caused by money-related stress, job loss, and other economic issues that can affect families. On a larger scale, it simply shows that high levels of stress can lead to more instances of child abuse.
Over two years, Berger found that 511 instances of head injuries took place in four cities, including Seattle, with 16 percent of children dying of their brain damage. While about five children per month were injured per month before the recession, nine children were harmed per month on average after the country suffered economic problems beginning in 2008. Shockingly, the strongest tie between child head injuries and the economy was seen in Seattle. Of course, these two rates have been correlated – but the causation is still not altogether clear.
