Baby slings have become an increasingly popular way to tote newborns and small infants – but a recent baby product recall has many parents in Washington State wondering how safe baby slings are. While trends in attachment parents put forth that having your baby close to you during the day helps the baby form a healthy bond and fuss less, others wonder how you can tell whether a baby sling is safe or dangerous.
Last week, Infantino, LLC, recalled over one million of their baby slings, citing a suffocation risk. In the last year, three infants have died in the slings, ages six days, weeks, and three months, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday. The CPSC say that the young baby’s neck muscles are too weak to move the baby’s head if they can’t breathe in the sling.
The baby slings have been sold since 2003 in Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies R Us, and other national stores for around $30. Those who have bought the baby slings can return the SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo and receive a different baby sling without safety risks made by the same company.
Mother Lisa Cochran was in a shopping center parking lot when she realized something was wrong with her baby, which had been placed in the sling and over her shoulder. By the time help reached her, her baby was dead. Cochran is now suing the baby sling company for wrongful death in regards to their defective product.
The baby sling company and the CPSC recommend that mothers stop using the baby sling for any child younger than four months immediately.
