Seattle Police believe a man who was critically injured in a downtown Seattle bike accident on Monday afternoon may have run a red light seconds before the collision. Witnesses also confirmed that the young cyclist may have run a red light into the path of an oncoming black Lexus.
The 25-year-old cyclist was hit by a car a the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Olive Way near the Westlake Center in Seattle at just after 4:30 p.m. Seattle Fire Department medics arrived on the scene of the cyclist accidents a few minutes later, transporting the bike accident victim to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The young man suffered a traumatic brain injury that may have been prevented if he had been wearing a safety helmet. There are no Washington State laws requiring cyclists to wear helmets. Police described his WA bike accident injuries as life threatening.
Traffic Collision Investigation detectives are speaking with the bike accident witnesses and have collected evidence from the scene of the Seattle cyclist accident. The investigation is ongoing. The driver of the Lexus has not been issued a citation for the incident or charged with any crimes.
Bike riders in Washington State are expected to follow the same rules of the road as other vehicles - and running a red light on a bicycle is illegal. Others note, however that the intersection where the accident took place is notorious for all types of traffic accidents.
