Death of Kirkland Software Engineer Highlights Dangers Of Road Rage

A Mountlake Terraceman who allegedly caused a fatal traffic accident during a road rage incident has pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular homicide and reckless driving this week in King County.

On July 24, 56-year-old Patrick Rexroat was possibly under the influence of alcohol and speeding when he lost control of his vehicle on the eastbound Northeast 85th Street exit off of I-405 in Seattle. His car collided with a BMW driven by Kirkland resident 43-year-old Steve Lacey, a well-known software engineer and Google employee who died in the crash. He left behind a wife and two young children.

When stopped by police, Rexroat claimed that he was chasing a car that cut him off on Interstate 405 – what authorities are calling a road rage incident. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.29 – almost four times the legal limit in Washington State. A witness said that when he exited the car after the crash, he was beating his chest in a rage. He claims he was feeling chest pain.

About two-dozen of Lacey’s friends and relatives crowded the courtroom. Many were outraged that Seattle failed to pass stricter vehicular and drunk driving laws last year and that Rexroat would not face more serious consequences.

Rexroat is in King County Jail on $1 million bail. The next hearing is scheduled for later this month. He could face up to 41 months in prison for the fatal car accident.
