A six-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Seattle, Washington, on Monday, June 1, was made even worse when a motorcycle crashed into an ambulance on the shoulder of the highway that was responding to the car accident. The motorcycle accident took place near Northgate Mall and 117th Avenue.
The motorcycle was riding in the northbound lane of the crash while the original accident took place in the southbound lanes of the crash. The Washington State Patrol reported that the motorcycle rider was distracted by the crash and was not looking where he was going at the time of the accident. Not even the flashing lights of the emergency vehicle made him more aware, said authorities, who also pointed out that the rider was listening to an iPod and wearing earphones at the time of the motorcycle accident.
The 29-year-old motorcycle driver was not seriously injured in the crash and was moving and talking in the moments after the bike accident. Police at the scene of the motorcycle accident said that his full-faced helmet saved his life.
The ambulance was parked on the shoulder at the time of the accident, and an American Medical Response medic was about to walk to the back of the ambulance seconds before the collision took place. Just minutes before, another emergency worker noticed distracted drivers keeping their eyes on the six-car crash instead of on the road.
The combination of the two early-morning accidents led to closed lanes and backed up traffic in both directions on I-5 that lasted for several hours.
