Ellensburg Woman Loses Lower Leg In Boating Accident

Posted on Jul 09, 2009

While the Fourth of July often means water sports, recreation, and other fun outdoor activities, it also means an increase in boating accidents, boating injuries, and boating fatalities across Washington State. This was certainly the case in Wanapum, Washington on Saturday, July 4, when a group of friends waterskiing on the Columbia River near Wanapum State Park found themselves the victims of a boating accident.

Seven people on the waterskiing boat were enjoying the day on Saturday afternoon when the boat made a sharp turn to pick up a fallen water skier. The boat turned too sharply, causing the craft to take on water in its bow, nose dive, and flip after hitting a wave created by wake. All seven occupants were thrown into the water. One, 20-year-old Alison McWeeny of Ellensburg, Washington, was ejected into the water and under the boat where her leg was severely injured.

The boat accident victim was rescued by a civilian boater and transported to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center. Doctors could not repair her leg and amputated the lower portion of it. None of the other boaters were hurt in the boat accident.

The under-sheriff in the area reported that McWeeny and one other boater were not wearing life jackets at the time of the boat accident according to other people in the boat.

The boat accident and its specific cause are still under investigation. Kittitas County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation. It is not known whether alcohol was a factor in this boating accident.
