Two years after a man was killed while riding his bike in Ballard, the owner of the vehicle has settled a personal injury claim with the man’s family.
In February 2009, University of Washington molecular science researcher Kevin Black was commuting in the bike lane on 24th Avenue when a van attempting a U-turn veered into the bike lane and struck the 39-year-old cyclist. While emergency crews rushed to the scene, administered CPR, and drove him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the cyclist died on his injuries not long after the accident. The driver, who was not charged in the wake of the fatal bike accident, has said that he never saw the biker before he felt the impact.
After a wrongful death lawsuit was filed in King County Court, the owner of the van, Ambient Control Co., agreed to a $1.5 million settlement with Black’s family, his wife and his two daughters. The two daughters, Emily and Megan, will split the money that remains after lawyer fees and court costs.
Black was an avid cyclist who was a member of a local bicycle club and who had biked to his high school reunion California in recent years.
