Fiery Two-Truck Accident on US 395 Closes Highway

Posted on May 08, 2009

On Monday, May 5, US 395 near Eltopia, Washington, was closed following a truck accident and fire. Washington State Patrol reported that a tractor-trailer ran into the back of a second tractor-trailer at roughly 3:30 p.m., causing a fire in one of the big rigs.

Both truck drivers were injured in the 18-wheeler accident. One driver, 48-year-old Lawrence Lamberson, suffered severe burns in the big rig accident. Trapped in his cab, Lamberson had to kick out the window of his truck in order to escape his fiery truck. Emergency workers transported him to Kennewick General Hospital and then to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

The second driver, Ben Garfias, suffered minor injuries and was quickly released from Kennewick General Hospital.

Garfias was hauling a truckload of gravel when he pulled onto Highway 395. As he was gaining speed on the road, Lamberson hit him from behind. When Franklin County firefighters arrived on the scene, Lamberson's truck was engulfed in flames, leaving very little of the semi by the time the flames were put out.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, as officials used a backhoe to remove the two trucks from the roadway and clear debris. The gravel truck was so heavy that emergency workers had to shovel gravel from the vehicle by hand. The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that traffic flow had returned to normal in time for the evening commute.
