Four-Year-Old Boy Dies From E. Coli Contracted At Washington Daycare

Posted on Apr 24, 2010

When most parents worry about sending their children to daycare, they worry about daycare abuse or a daycare accident. However, one Washington boy was killed and three others harmed after an E. Coli food poisoning outbreak in a Vancouver daycare center.

Washington State health officials announced that a four-year-old boy was hospitalized in Clark County after falling ill and that three other children from the same daycare were brought in following his diagnosis.

Investigators temporarily closed the home-based daycare and are looking in to what could have caused the child illnesses. The home is run by couple Dianne and Larry Fletch. The bacterial strain found in the boy’s system, E. coli O157:H7, has a history of causing deadly outbreaks after contaminating ground meats or produce.

After the boy died, health officials tested 22 more children and four adults who worked with or near the children. Six people tested positive for the bacteria though none required medical attention or showed symptoms of being infected. While Washington officials think that the bacteria came from one source, how the bacteria spread is still unknown – the outbreak could have been caused by bad water, contaminated food, an unclean environment, person-to-person contact, or even a simple diaper change.

WA investigators say that the daycare will remain closed until the environment is found to be free of the E. Coli and that the children will not be able to return until they are tested and declared healthy.
