Hooded Sweatshirt Leads To Strangulation Of Washington State Child

Posted on Feb 27, 2009

KMTR News reports that a Washington State toddler was strangled to death my a defective hooded sweatshirt last week, inciting the clothing company to recall the shirt before others are injured or killed.

A three-year-old Washington boy was wearing the sweatshirt while playing on a playground swing set. One of the cords attached to the hood became caught on the playground set, causing his strangulation death.

The sweatshirt was manufactured by Hill Sportswear, who has recalled a few different items that may prove dangerous, including around 300,000 Kid Pullover Hood Sweatshirts and Kid Zipper Sweatshirts. The sweatshirts were sold at a number of different stores in the southwest region of the country between August of 1999 and December of 2008, from California to Texas. They costs around eight dollars and include the lettering Hill/Made in the USA on the labels. Both types of shirt are hooded and include the dangerous drawstring that could lead to strangulation.

The Kid Zipper sweatshirts included a rounded style drawstring, a fleece inner lining, and two pockets near the waist of the garment. The Kid Pullover Hooded shirt has a flat style drawstring at the neck, a fleece inner lining, and one large pocket located at the waist. The children's sweatshirts were available in black, grey, and a variety of other colors.

Because the sweatshirts are considered defective and dangerous, parents are urged to immediately stop using the sweatshirts to prevent the strangling hazard. Alternatively, parents can remove the drawstring from the sweatshirt and continue use. The shirts can also be returned to the Hill Sportswear or the original store of purchase for a full refund for the garment.

About 130 children die from choking or strangulation accidents in the United States each year - prevent such accidents by keeping abreast of recalls, supervising your children's play, and removing any hazards from your children's home and environment.
