The Seattle Times reported a multiple injury bus accident in Des Moines, Washington near the 216th Street exit on Friday, November 28, 2008 when a red pickup truck lost its ladder which fell onto the southbound lanes of I-5. A chartered bus from Chinook Charter Service was carrying the starting players from the Bellevue High School football team for a playoff game at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington when the crash occurred.
The driver of the bus swerved to the right to avoid hitting the ladder, across a lane of travel and off the highway into a steep embankment. The bus rolled onto its left side as many of the passengers were tossed about inside the bus causing injuries to a number of players. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured but several were taken to local hospitals for evaluation including Valley Medical Center in Renton, Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, and Highline Medical Center in Burien.
Three other vehicles were also involved in the accident including a semi-truck and two passenger cars. The driver of one car had injuries to the neck and back.
Snohomish County company, Chinook Charter Service, received a satisfactory rating from the U.S. Department of Transportation in February 2008. However, the state Utilities and Transportation Commission fined Chinook Charter Service $4000 in 2006 for 41 violations of federal safety regulations.
