According to the Seattle Times, one person was killed and four more were injured in two separate car accidents on Highway 2 in Leavenworth, Washington last weekend. The accidents occurred just a mile apart on the highway about ten miles outside of town and local police say that the initial investigations has revealed that both accidents were caused by a combination of speed and icy conditions.
In the first accident, an SUV carrying a family of four from Edmonds, Washington, lost control on the highway, slid into a snow bank, and flipped over. The woman in the passenger seat, 49-year-old Gay Ullerich, was killed in the accident, while her husband and the driver Jeffrey Ullerich and their two teenaged children all suffered serious injuries. All three of the surviving car accident victims were rushed to Cascade Medical Center for treatment.
In the second accident, which happened just minutes after the first, an unidentified man broke his neck when he lost control of his pickup truck, slid into a snow bank, and flipped over. The 82-year-old Edmonds man was rushed to Central Washington Hospital.
Washington State Patrol officers responded to the scene of both car accidents, which took place on Saturday morning.
While both car may not have been going above the posted speed limit, it is important to remember that icy conditions and slick roads often require drivers to slow down significantly.
