Months after a deadly wrong-way interstate car crash in Washington State, several unanswered questions still remain. With the investigation coming to a dead end, Washington State Patrol officers now say that they may never know where the wrong way driver was headed or what caused him to enter the interstate in the wrong direction.
In November 2010, 26-year-old Mar De La Mora left his job at the Columbia Center Mall near Richland and was supposed to be headed home. He never got there. For unknown reasons, the young man drove onto I-82 in the wrong direction near Dallas Road and soon slammed into a car carrying 27-year-old Heather Davidson, her finance 30-year-old Stephen Metzger, and their three-year-old son Brennen. Of the four people involved in the Washington car crash, only the toddler survived.
Not only do the police and the De La Mora family not understand where the young man was headed, they also don’t know why he might have gotten onto the wrong side of the interstate. Recently, the man’s drug and alcohol tests came back negative. He suffered from diabetes, and some believe that his confusion was caused by off blood sugar levels or another complication of his condition. Police also noted that there was fog in the area on the day of the accident and the man could have simply become disoriented.
Police are also not sure where De La Mora got on the interstate in the wrong direction. Very few witness saw his car on the highway and because of the weather, not many people were on the road.
