A Washington State family is in mourning after a 14-month old child was struck and killed by a neighbor backing out of a driveway in Kent this week.
According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the one-year-old boy slipped out of his home on Southeast 223rd Place in Kent on Wednesday night and wandered onto a neighbor’s property. Just before seven in the evening, the boy was in the neighbor’s driveway when an 18-year-old girl backed her car out of the garage and struck the boy. She told authorities that she didn’t see the young child in her mirrors.
Emergency responders attempted to revive the child, but he was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident even though a helicopter was en route to take the boy to a nearby hospital. According to a spokesperson from the Kent Fire Department, an ambulance arrived at the scene just three minutes after the call came in.
Authorities investigating the case said that they did not believe that the girl driving the car was driving under the influence or driving while distracted, but rather that the incident was a simple accident that could have happened to anyone. The collision has been ruled an accident, but the case is not yet closed.
Unfortunately, driveway backover accidents are common, especially when involving toddlers and very young children that cannot be seen when they are located close to the back of a vehicle. They are also common in suburban environments where many children play, ride bikes, and wander in front of neighbors’ driveways.
