King County Assessor Investigated For Vehicular Assault Following I-5 Crash

Posted on Mar 24, 2009

MSNBC and King 5 News reports that King County Assessor Scott Noble is being investigated for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and vehicular assault following a head-on wreck last month. Washington State Patrol Officers said that 58-year-old man from Bellevue who has been Assessor since 1992 had a blood alcohol level of 0.22 after the crash occurred according to lab work - three times the legal limit.

The accident took place on January 18, 2009, at ten minutes past two in the morning. Noble was driving a Toyota Highlander on I-5 when he took an illegal u-turn and proceeded the wrong way down the interstate. Near Federal Way, he ran head-on into a Jeep carrying two female passengers aged 24 and 26 and from Oak Harbor. All three were sent to the hospital - Noble for a few weeks, the women after a brief stay. All three were treated at Harborview Medical Center.

The accident happened near the onramp of Highway 18 in Auburn.

"The driver said that she just saw headlights, and she didn't even have time to react," said Washington State Trooper Christina Martin said.

Accident reports by Washington officers say that Noble was emotional and had been in an argument with his wife. He admitted to drinking too much, had bloodshot eyes, and smelled of alcohol. Both cars were totaled in the crash.

"Very lucky to walk away. You're looking at a very high velocity, impact, headlight to headlight," said Trooper Cliff Pratt. "We had a lot of witnesses who saw him pull over to the right shoulder and do a quick U-turn. The State Patrol detectives advised him he was under arrest for suspicion of two counts, DUI and vehicular assault."

To avoid a conflict of interest, King County prosecutors are giving the case to the Washington State Attorney General's office for review.

Noble, a democrat, has was re-elected to his fifth term in 2007. He is a University of Washington graduate and a Vietnam veteran.
