In the same week that Seattle paid a $2.75 million settlement to the family of a man killed in a Chinatown crosswalk, King County has reached a $4.5 million settlement with a woman who suffered a severe brain injury when she was struck by a bus while using a city crosswalk.
According to the Seattle Times, 45-year-old Ree Ah Bloedow was struck by the mirror of a King County bus while crossing the street in a marked sidewalk in Seattle’s Alaskan Way. The pedestrian accident, which took place in 2008, left Bloedow with a severe brain injury and a shattered arm. Since the Seattle pedestrian accident took place, her head injury has made it impossible for her to return to her career as a staff attorney for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. Much of the settlement will be for the lawyer’s lost future wages, while part of the settlement will cover her extensive medical bills over the past three years. The woman is not expected to be able to return to her job as an attorney for the rest of her life because of her bus accident injuries.
King County and Seattle’s Metro have taken responsibility for the bus accident, saying that the bus driver in the incident was not paying attention and that the woman was in a clearly marked crosswalk when she was hit.
Bloedow filed her personal injury lawsuit against King County in 2009 and the case was set to go to trial next week.
