A Washington State man has been sentenced to over eight years in prison following a drunk driving accident on Interstate 5 that killed two teens last summer.
According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 51-year-old Alexander Peder pleaded guilty to counts of vehicular manslaughter. In the past, he had also pleaded guilty to two different drunk driving charges. In both of those cases, he was convicted of lesser charges, including reckless endangerment. He received a one-year suspended sentence.
In June, Peder, a resident of Kirland, was driving southbound along I-5 outside Southcenter when he slammed into the back of a car that was stalled on the road. Two Decatur High School seniors were killed in the accident, 18-year-old Nicholas Hodgins and 18-year-old Derek King. Another young man in the car, 19-year-old Anthony Beaver, was seriously injured in the wreck. The two boys that died were to graduate the next day.
Peder was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Police also found a half-empty bottle of vodka in the car that had been purchased earlier in the evening.
While Peder did not speak at the sentencing, several family members of the victims addressed the man and the court. The father of one of the boys voiced anger that the man had to be involved in a fatal car accident before being charged with a DUI.
