A young boy was struck by a pickup truck and seriously injured while riding his bicycle in Kitsap this week, and area residents say that the area where the child bike accident took place is a dangerous one for children.
According to the Kitsap Sun, an 8-year-old was riding his bike when he was struck by a 30-year-old man driving a Ford F250 pickup truck. The bike accident took place at the corner of Goldstone Lane, which intersects with Old Military Road. Police say that witnesses reported that the boy and a group of other children were searching for a lost dog at the time of the collision.
An initial investigation has found that the man was not speeding at the time of the accident and that they do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Residents of the area say that they are not surprised that a child bike accident took place on the road near Opal Court, as many children use the area for biking and to access a nearby school. That, paired with the steep downhill that leads to speeding, is a recipe for these accidents, they said.
The driver, who had two young children in his pickup, stopped at the accident scene and is cooperating with police. The young boy was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he remains in serious condition. He was not wearing a bicycle helmet.
