With warmer weather reaching Washington State, a spike in toddler falls from windows has begun as residents begin to open their windows to let in spring breezes. However, many do not know that screens are not meant to bear weight and do not protect against children falling from widows.
Lake Stevens Police Chief Randy Celori told reporters that a three-year-old girl in Lake Stevens was rushed to the hospital after falling out of a second story window of a residential building on April 21. The girl brought to Harborview Medical Center by rescue workers after the accident and injury and is now listed in satisfactory condition. The accident occurred in the 500 Block of 127 Avenue NE at around four in the afternoon. The day the child fell, temperatures had hit 70 degrees for the first time this season.
This fall took place after a young Marysville boy fell out of a window on March 24 and after a two-year-old Kent boy fell from a window on to a driveway in February.
According to Snohomish County’s HeraldNet, many children fall from windows and suffer serious injuries, especially during the warmer weather of the spring, summer, and fall. A child safety advocate suggested that parents do not put furniture near windows and to watch their children at all times. In addition, parents can install safety guards on second story windows. Finally, parents can keep children safe by not opening their windows more than four inches.
